Supplies:
Skittles (a handful per group)
Shallow white dish or plate
Milk (enough to cover the base of the dish)
Table or tray for easy cleanup
Steps:
Arrange the Skittles in a circle around the edge of the dish.
Carefully pour milk into the centre of the dish until it just covers the bottom and touches all the Skittles.
Watch as the colours from the Skittles slowly spread towards the centre, creating a swirling rainbow effect.
Let the children observe the changes and discuss what they notice about how the colours move and mix.
Other Information:
Works best with room temperature milk.
The colour spreads as the sugar coating dissolves into the liquid, causing the dye to move.
Encourage children to predict what will happen before adding the milk.
