Zodiac Animal Clay Creations

Children sculpt their own Chinese Zodiac animal using modelling clay or air-dry clay.
🧰 Supplies
Per table:
Air-dry clay OR reusable modelling clay
Clay mats or baking paper
Small cups of water (for smoothing, if using air-dry clay)
Toothpicks (for detail work – supervised use)
Plastic sculpting tools or paddle pop sticks
Printed Zodiac Animal reference sheet
Black marker (for details once dry)
Optional:
Gold paint
Red paint
Small beads (eyes)
Clear sealant (if keeping long-term)
👣 Steps
1️⃣ Introduce the Zodiac
Briefly explain:
“The Chinese Zodiac has 12 animals. Each year is represented by an animal.”
Show pictures of the 12 animals:Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
Let children:
Choose their birth year animalOR
Choose their favourite animal.
2️⃣ Demonstrate Basic Clay Techniques
Show children how to:
Roll a ball (for body)
Roll a sausage (for tails, legs, necks)
Pinch (for ears)
Press gently to attach pieces
Smooth joins with a tiny bit of water
Keep demo short (2–3 minutes).
3️⃣ Build the Base Shape
Encourage:
Start with the body.
Add head.
Attach legs.
Add tail, ears, horns, whiskers.
Remind them:
“Small pieces attach better when you press and smooth.”
4️⃣ Add Details
Use tools or toothpicks to:
Add eyes
Draw scales (for dragon/snake)
Add fur texture
Mark hooves
Create feather lines (for rooster)
5️⃣ Dry & Finish
If using air-dry clay:
Leave to dry 24–48 hours.
Once dry, outline features with marker.
Optional: paint red and gold details.
