What is a Diya?
A Diya is a small traditional oil lamp used in India, especially during the festival of Diwali (the Festival of Lights). Diyas are often made of clay and lit with a cotton wick dipped in oil or ghee. They symbolise light overcoming darkness, good defeating evil, and hope and knowledge spreading into the world.
During Diwali, families light many Diyas and place them around homes, windows, and doorways to welcome joy, luck, and prosperity.
Materials Needed:
Air-dry clay or salt dough (homemade or store-bought)
Rolling pin (optional)
Plastic knives or modelling tools (for shaping)
Small tealight candles (battery-operated for safety)
Acrylic paint
Paintbrushes
Glitter glue, sequins, or gems (optional for decorating)
Newspaper or placemats to work on
Instructions:
Introduce the DiyaBegin with a short chat about what Diwali is and why Diyas are lit. Show photos or examples if available.
Shape the ClayGive each child a ball of clay (about the size of a golf ball).Press thumbs into the centre and gently pinch the edges to form a small bowl shape. You can shape one side into a small point (like a flame spout) to mimic traditional Diya styles.
Smooth and DrySmooth out edges and let dry completely if using air-dry clay (usually overnight). If you're using salt dough, bake according to your recipe, then let cool.
Paint the DiyaOnce dry, children can paint their Diya with bright colours—reds, oranges, pinks, and golds are popular choices.Add glitter glue or sequins for extra sparkle.
Add a CandlePlace a battery tealight candle inside the finished Diya to safely light it up.
