Supplies
A bell, jingle bracelet, or noisy item for the “Elf”
Optional: Christmas music
A large open space
Set Up
Choose one player to be the Sneaky Elf.
Give the Elf a small bell or jingle bracelet to hold behind their back.
All other players spread out around the room or sit in a circle facing outward (depending on the version you want to play).
How to Play
Version 1 — Classic Sneak Attack
The Elf tries to sneak up on players without being heard.
Players must keep their eyes forward and listen carefully.
If a player hears the Elf coming, they turn around and yell “STOP ELF!”
If the Elf reaches a player without being caught, they gently tap them on the shoulder — that player becomes the new Elf.
If someone catches the Elf in motion, the Elf must freeze for 5 seconds before sneaking again.
Version 2 — Circle Drop
(Perfect for littlies or bigger groups)
All players sit in a circle facing outward.
The Elf tiptoes around the circle holding the bell quietly.
They choose one person and drop the bell behind them.
Once the bell hits the floor, the chosen player must jump up, grab the bell, and chase the Elf around the circle.
If the Elf makes it back to the empty spot first, they stay the Elf.
If the player tags the Elf, they become the new Elf.
Version 3 — Musical Elves
(High-energy option)
Play Christmas music.
Players move/dance around the room.
When the music stops, the Elf sneaks out and tries to tag someone before they freeze.
Anyone tagged joins the Elf team.
Game ends when everyone has been tagged!
Rules & Safety
Sneak, don’t sprint.
Gentle tags only.
No jumping on or surprising kids too closely.
Elf must keep the bell behind their back unless dropping it.
