Supplies Needed:
A large, open space
Instructions:
Choose the Octopus: To start the game, choose one player to be the "Octopus". The Octopus stands in the middle of the playing field.
Set the Boundaries: The rest of the players ("the fish") stand at one end of the playing field. This is their safe zone. The other end of the field is also a safe zone.
Start the Game: The Octopus shouts out a category and all the children who fit in that category have to try to run to the other safe zone without being tagged. Category's can be things like - if you are wearing (colour) or if you are in year (number), or if you hair is tied up, if you have shoes on etc.
Tag the Fish: If a fish is tagged by the Octopus while running to the other safe zone, they become "seaweed" and must freeze in place.
Become Seaweed: The seaweed players can't move their feet, but they can wave their arms around and help the Octopus tag the other fish in the next rounds.
Win the Game: The game continues until all the fish have become seaweed or if a fish successfully makes it to the other side of the playing field without being tagged. That fish becomes the new Octopus for the next round.
Safety is important while playing this game. Ensure the playing area is free of hazards, and remind the children to be aware of their surroundings and to avoid running into each other.
