Supplies
Pipe cleaners (red, pink or colour of choice)
Macramé cord or thick yarn
Scissors
Ruler (optional)
Fine-toothed comb (optional, for fringe)
Tip: Pre-cutting short lengths of cord makes this easier for younger children.
Instructions
1. Make the Heart Frame
Take a pipe cleaner and bend it at about one-third of the length to form the bottom point of the heart.
Shape the rest into a heart, bringing the ends together at the top curves.
Twist the ends together to secure the shape. Adjust until you are happy with the heart outline.
2. Prepare the Cord
Cut 40–50 pieces of macramé cord, each about 10 cm (4 in) long.
(More pieces = fuller fringe.)
3. Attach Cord With Lark’s-Head Knots
Take one cord piece and fold it in half.
Place the folded loop under the pipe cleaner heart.
Bring the two loose ends up through the loop above the pipe cleaner.
Pull gently to tighten — cord should sit snugly against the frame.
Repeat around the entire heart until the frame is covered and cord pieces are close together.
4. Add a Hanger
Cut one longer piece of cord (about 25 cm / 10 in).
Fold in half and attach with the same lark’s-head knot at the top centre of the heart.
Tie a regular knot at the bottom of the loop — this becomes your hanger.
5. Fluff & Trim the Fringe
If you have a comb, gently comb out the cord ends to make a soft, fringed look.
Hold the heart and trim the cords evenly so they form a tidy fringe at the bottom.
