Paper plane challenge

Supplies:

  • A4 paper (1–3 sheets per child, plain or coloured)

  • Markers or crayons for decorating

  • Measuring tape or cones to mark distances

  • Large indoor or outdoor space

Steps:

  1. Introduction: Explain to the kids they’ll design, fold, decorate, and fly their own paper planes in a fun competition.

  2. Making the Planes:

    • Give each child a sheet of paper.

    • Allow 5–10 minutes for folding and testing their plane design.

    • Optional: decorate the planes with colours, stripes, or names.

  3. Competition Setup:

    • Mark a throwing line with tape or chalk.

    • Use cones or tape marks every metre for measuring.

  4. Throwing Rounds:

    • Each child gets two throws.

    • Measure the distance of each throw from the starting line to where the plane lands.

  5. Scoring:

    • Best throw distance counts as their score.

    • Optional extra awards for “Longest Flight Time,” “Most Creative Design,” and “Best Trick Flight.”

  6. Wrap-Up:

    • Celebrate all entries and hand out fun certificates or stickers for winners in each category.

Other Information:

  • Indoors avoids wind interference, but outdoors is more fun if it’s calm.

  • Allow extra time for younger children who may need help folding.
