Supplies

  • 1 large canvas per site(Canvas will already have the title written on it:**“Our (Site Name) PKC Tree – Growing Together in 2026”)*

  • Pencil

  • Black or dark brown paint pen / permanent marker (tree outline)

  • Fine black permanent marker (for names – staff only)

  • Washable paint (one colour or agreed colour palette)

  • Small paint trays or plates

  • Baby wipes / wet wipes

  • Paper towels

  • Aprons or old shirts

Set-Up (Staff Only)

  1. Prepare the tree outline

    • Lightly sketch a large tree trunk and branches on the canvas using pencil.

    • Go over the outline with a paint pen or permanent marker so it is bold and clear.

    • Ensure branches are spread out to allow room for thumbprints to be added across the year.

  2. Check the title

    • Confirm the canvas already includes:“Our (Site Name) PKC Tree – Growing Together in 2026”

    • Do not add or change wording.

How to Run the Activity

  1. Prepare the paint

    • Place a small amount of washable paint onto trays or plates.

    • Keep paint away from the canvas until children are ready.

  2. Explain the activity to childrenStaff can say:

“This tree shows everyone who is part of our PKC family.Your thumbprint will be one of the leaves on our tree.”

  3. Add thumbprints

    • Lightly dip one thumb into the paint.

    • Press the thumb onto a branch area of the tree to create a “leaf”.

    • Each child adds one thumbprint only.

  4. Staff write the child’s name

    • Once the thumbprint has been placed, staff write the child’s first name neatly next to the thumbprint using a fine black marker.

    • Ensure writing is small and clear and does not overlap other thumbprints.

  5. Clean up hands

    • Wipe thumbs immediately using baby wipes or paper towels.

    • Encourage handwashing if required.

  6. Dry time

    • Allow the canvas to dry fully before moving or hanging.

Ongoing Use Throughout the Year

  • New children joining the programme should:

    • Be invited to add their thumbprint during their first week.

  • Staff should:

    • Continue writing the child’s name next to each new thumbprint

    • Space thumbprints carefully to allow room for growth

    • Use the same marker style for consistency

Safety & Behaviour Notes

  • Use non-toxic, washable paint only

  • Supervise closely to avoid paint on clothing or walls

  • Remind children not to touch other thumbprints

  • Only staff are to write names on the canvas
