What is Rangoli?
Rangoli is a traditional Indian art form made with coloured powders, rice, flower petals, or chalk. It is usually created on the ground at the entrance of homes during festivals like Diwali, to welcome happiness, luck, and good fortune.
Rangoli designs are colourful, symmetrical patterns, often featuring flowers, leaves, circles, or geometric shapes. Each design is unique and created to spread joy and positivity.
Materials Needed:
Footpath chalk in a range of bright colours
Large outdoor surface (concrete, asphalt, or pavers)
Optional: printouts of Rangoli patterns for inspiration
Optional: white chalk to sketch a guide first
Damp cloth or sponge for cleanup (if needed)
Instructions:
Talk About RangoliBegin by discussing the meaning of Rangoli and showing a few examples. Talk about symmetry, repeating patterns, and the use of bright colours.
Sketch a Basic DesignUsing white chalk, lightly draw the outline of a symmetrical design. You can keep it simple with a central flower and radiating petals or shapes.
Add ColourFill in each section using different coloured chalks. Encourage the children to take their time and follow the patterns carefully.
Work TogetherIf you are doing a group Rangoli, divide the pattern into sections so each child gets a part to work on.
Admire and ShareTake a photo of the finished artwork and talk about how the design makes them feel. What colours did they use? What shapes did they repeat?
Tips:
Encourage children to start small and build confidence before attempting more detailed designs.
