Spaghetti & Marshmallow Bridge Challenge
Goal: Build a bridge using only spaghetti and marshmallows that can hold weight (like a toy car or a small cup of coins) and span a set distance (e.g. 30cm).
Supplies (per team):
1 pack of dried spaghetti (uncooked)
1 bag of standard-sized marshmallows
Ruler or measuring tape
Weights to test (e.g. small toy car, coins, or a cup with marbles)
Flat surface (tables or floor)
Timer (optional)
Paper and pencil for sketching (optional)
Steps:
Form TeamsDivide children into small teams of 2–4.
Explain the ChallengeEach team must build a bridge that:
Spans 30cm between two surfaces (books, boxes, or tables).
Uses only spaghetti and marshmallows.
Can hold as much weight as possible before breaking.
Planning Time (Optional)Give teams 5–10 minutes to sketch their design or discuss ideas.
Build PhaseGive each team 20–30 minutes to build their bridge using their supplies.
Test Time!Place the bridge between two surfaces and gradually add weight to see how much it can hold before collapsing.
Celebrate & Reflect
Celebrate creativity, teamwork, and any surprising outcomes!
Ask reflection questions like: What worked well? What would you try differently next time?
Other Information:
Younger children may benefit from cutting spaghetti sticks in half or using mini marshmallows for easier handling.
For more challenge: limit the number of marshmallows or spaghetti pieces.
Bonus twist: add an extra rule like "no triangles" or "must be tall enough for a toy to roll under."
