Straw Weaving Necklace

Supplies

  • Drinking straws (cut to ~15cm pieces)

  • Colourful wool or yarn

  • Scissors

  • Tape (optional, to secure straws while weaving)

  • Beads (optional, for decoration)

Steps

  1. Give each child 3–4 straws of equal length.

  2. Thread the yarn through the straws (use a needle or tape the end of the yarn to help push it through).

    • Each straw will have yarn running through it.

  3. Tie the yarn together at one end so the straws are held side by side.

  4. Using another long piece of yarn, begin to weave in and out across the straws (over one straw, under the next, repeat).

  5. Push the yarn down tightly as they weave, creating colourful patterns.

  6. Continue weaving until they reach the end of the straws.

  7. Carefully slide the straws out, leaving the woven yarn tube.

  8. Tie off the ends securely and shape the woven piece into a necklace.

  9. Optional: Add beads to the ends before tying for extra decoration.
