Tapuwae

Supplies

  • Cones or markers to outline playing area

  • A ball (medium-sized, soft is best)

Steps

  1. Set up – Create a square or rectangular playing area with cones. Place one cone or marker inside at each end to act as the “target.”

  2. Divide teams – Split the group into two teams. Each team stands behind their line on opposite sides of the court.

  3. Objective – Players try to hit the opposing team’s cone/target with the ball by throwing it, while the defending team blocks or stops the ball.

  4. Rules –

    • Players must stay behind their line when throwing.

    • The defending team can block with their bodies but cannot step past their line.

    • If the cone is knocked over or touched by the ball, the attacking team scores a point.

  5. Rotate turns – After each throw, the ball is returned to the other team.

  6. Winning – Play to a set number of points or within a set time. The team with the most points wins.

Other Information

  • Great for teamwork, accuracy, and hand–eye coordination.

  • Can be adapted for younger tamariki with a bigger ball or closer targets.

  • Encourage calling out in te reo Māori (e.g., “Kei te haere!” – “It’s coming!”).
