What is Kho Kho?
Kho Kho is a traditional team-based chasing game from India. It focuses on speed, teamwork, and strategy. One team chases while the other runs, and players must tag opponents by working together,
with a fun twist: they can’t run just anywhere!
Equipment Needed:
Cones or chalk to mark a centre line and end lines
Optional: bibs or coloured bands to separate teams
How to Set Up:
Create a Centre Line:
Mark a long straight line through the middle of your play area (about 20–30m if outside).
Place cones or markers evenly along the line (every 2–3 metres).
Form Two Teams:
Divide into two even teams. One team will start as the chasers, the other as the runners.
Chasers Sit on the Line:
The chasers (except one) sit on the line, facing alternate directions (one left, one right, and so on).
One chaser stays standing — they are the active chaser who will do the tagging.
How to Play:
Start the Game:
The runners spread out in the play area.
The active chaser begins trying to tag one of them.
Tagging with Help:
The active chaser can run only in one direction and can’t cross the centre line.
To change direction, they must run behind a sitting teammate and tap their back while saying "Kho!"
That player then becomes the new chaser and continues chasing immediately in the opposite direction.
Continue Until Time or All Are Tagged:
The chasing team has a set time (e.g. 2–3 minutes) to try and tag as many runners as possible.
Switch teams and repeat.
Winning the Game:
The team that tags the most players in the fastest time wins.
Or, play multiple rounds and tally total tags.
Safety Tips:
Ensure the space is clear of obstacles.
Use safe tagging (light touches, no pushing).
Remind children to stay in control while running.
