Bridge build challenge (straws)

Supplies (per group or individual):

  • Plastic or paper straws (around 20)

  • String (about 1 metre)

  • Tape (masking tape or clear tape)

  • Scissors

  • 2 chairs or tables (to create a gap to bridge)

  • Small weights (e.g. marbles, small toy cars, coins) for testing

Steps:

  1. Set the SceneSet up two chairs or tables about 30–50cm apart. This will be the "gap" that the bridge must span. Let kids know their bridge must connect both sides without falling and hold some weight!

  2. Plan the DesignEncourage kids to sketch or think about a design before building. Discuss what makes a strong bridge (e.g. triangles, trusses, support beams).

  3. Build the BridgeUsing only straws, string, and tape, children construct a bridge that spans the gap. They can use string for tension cables, tape to secure joins, and straws to build the structure.

  4. Test the BridgeOnce complete, test the bridge by gently placing weights on top. See how much weight it can hold without breaking or collapsing.

  5. Reflect & ShareAsk:

    • What worked well?

    • What would you change next time?

    • How did your team work together?

Other Information:

  • Great for team or solo challenges.

  • Ideal timing: 30–45 minutes.

  • Encourage creativity – there's no “right” way.

  • For older children, increase the challenge by limiting supplies or setting a weight target.
