Make Your Own Ice Blocks


Supplies

  • Ice block moulds (any type you have onsite)

  • Freezer space

  • Mixing jug or bowl

  • Spoons for stirring

  • Optional: measuring cups

  • Ingredients depending on recipe (see options below)


Steps

1. Choose a Recipe

Let the kids vote or choose from the recipe options below.

2. Mix Your Ice Block Base

Use a jug or bowl to combine ingredients.Kids can help measure, pour, mix, and taste-test!

3. Pour Into Moulds

Carefully pour the mixture into the moulds, leaving a small gap at the top (they expand when frozen).

Staff tip: Use a small funnel or a jug with a spout to reduce spills.

4. Add the Sticks

Most moulds include built-in sticks/lids.If using wooden sticks, freeze the mix for 45 minutes first so the sticks can sit upright.

5. Freeze

Place moulds in the freezer for at least 4–6 hours or until completely solid.Best made in the morning for afternoon tea, or the day before.

6. Serve

Run the mould under warm water for a few seconds to loosen the ice block.Hand out and enjoy in an outdoor space.

🍓 Recipe Options


Option 1: Fresh Fruit Ice Blocks

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fruit juice (orange, apple, tropical)

  • Sliced or chopped fruit (berries, kiwi, pineapple, grapes)

Method:

  1. Add fruit pieces to moulds.

  2. Pour juice over the top.

  3. Freeze.

Light, healthy, colourful.

Option 2: Smoothie Ice Blocks

Ingredients:

  • 2 bananas

  • 1 cup yoghurt

  • 1 cup frozen berries

  • ½ cup milk or apple juice

Method:

  1. Blend together.

  2. Pour into moulds.

  3. Freeze.

Creamy and filling — great for hot days.

Option 3: Jelly Ice Blocks

Ingredients:

  • 1 packet jelly crystals (any flavour)

  • 2 cups boiling water

  • Optional: chopped fruit

Method:

  1. Mix jelly crystals with boiling water, stir until dissolved.

  2. Let cool for 5–10 minutes.

  3. Pour into moulds.

  4. Add fruit if using.

  5. Freeze.

Bright, colourful, kid favourite.

Option 4: Milo Ice Blocks

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups milk

  • 3–4 tbsp Milo

  • 1–2 tbsp sugar (optional)

Method:

  1. Stir Milo into warm milk until dissolved.

  2. Cool slightly, pour into moulds.

  3. Freeze.

NZ classic!

Option 5: Lemonade Pops

Ingredients:

  • Lemonade or Sprite

  • Thin lemon slices (optional)

Method:

  1. Add lemon slices to moulds.

  2. Fill with lemonade.

  3. Freeze.

Simple, fizzy, refreshing.
