Supplies:

  • 2 cups plain flour

  • 1 cup salt

  • 1 cup warm water

  • Mixing bowl

  • Wooden spoon

  • Rolling pin

  • Christmas cookie cutters (stars, trees, gingerbread men, etc.)

  • Baking tray

  • Baking paper

  • Straw or skewer (for making holes)

  • Acrylic paint or markers

  • Paintbrushes

  • Ribbon or string

  • Clear sealer (optional but helps decorations last longer)

Steps:

  1. Mix the dough:

    • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.

    • Slowly add the warm water, mixing until the dough starts to come together.

    • Knead the dough for 2–3 minutes until smooth.

  2. Roll it out:

    • Sprinkle a little flour on the table to stop sticking.

    • Roll the dough to about 1cm thickness.

  3. Cut the shapes:

    • Use Christmas cookie cutters to press out festive shapes.

    • Transfer each shape gently onto a baking-paper-lined tray.

  4. Make a hanging hole:

    • Use a straw or skewer to poke a small hole at the top of each decoration.

  5. Bake:

    • Bake at 120°C for 2–3 hours, or until completely hard and dry.

    • Allow to cool fully before decorating.

  6. Decorate:

    • Paint, draw, add glitter, or personalise however you like.

    • Let the paint dry, then seal with a clear spray or Mod Podge if you want them to last longer.

  7. Add ribbon:

    • Thread string or ribbon through the hole and tie a loop for hanging.

Other Information:

  • Drying alternative: If an oven isn’t available, leave shapes to air-dry for 24–48 hours.

  • Keepsake idea: Encourage children to press their thumbprints into the dough for a personalised ornament.

  • Storage: Keep leftovers wrapped in cling film to prevent drying.Salt Dough Christmas Decorations
