Supplies:
2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
1 cup warm water
Mixing bowl
Wooden spoon
Rolling pin
Christmas cookie cutters (stars, trees, gingerbread men, etc.)
Baking tray
Baking paper
Straw or skewer (for making holes)
Acrylic paint or markers
Paintbrushes
Ribbon or string
Clear sealer (optional but helps decorations last longer)
Steps:
Mix the dough:
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
Slowly add the warm water, mixing until the dough starts to come together.
Knead the dough for 2–3 minutes until smooth.
Roll it out:
Sprinkle a little flour on the table to stop sticking.
Roll the dough to about 1cm thickness.
Cut the shapes:
Use Christmas cookie cutters to press out festive shapes.
Transfer each shape gently onto a baking-paper-lined tray.
Make a hanging hole:
Use a straw or skewer to poke a small hole at the top of each decoration.
Bake:
Bake at 120°C for 2–3 hours, or until completely hard and dry.
Allow to cool fully before decorating.
Decorate:
Paint, draw, add glitter, or personalise however you like.
Let the paint dry, then seal with a clear spray or Mod Podge if you want them to last longer.
Add ribbon:
Thread string or ribbon through the hole and tie a loop for hanging.
Other Information:
Drying alternative: If an oven isn’t available, leave shapes to air-dry for 24–48 hours.
Keepsake idea: Encourage children to press their thumbprints into the dough for a personalised ornament.
Storage: Keep leftovers wrapped in cling film to prevent drying.Salt Dough Christmas Decorations
