Steps

1. Choose Your Summer Shapes

Kids draw or trace summer-themed shapes such as:

  • Suns

  • Ice creams

  • Watermelons

  • Sunglasses

  • Flip-flops

  • Palm trees

  • Seashells

  • Waves

  • Flowers

Staff tip: You can also pre-print summer shape templates for younger children.

2. Colour and Decorate

Children colour their shapes using:

  • Markers

  • Pencils

  • Paint (if time allows)

They can add:

  • Glitter to make sparkling suns

  • Feathers for tropical birds

  • Buttons or sequins for “bling”

Let creativity lead!

3. Cut Out the Shapes

Kids carefully cut out their decorated shapes.

Younger children may need help with curves or thin lines.

4. Punch a Hole in Each Shape

Use a hole punch or pencil tip to gently poke a hole at the top of each shape. This is where the string will attach.

5. Attach Strings

Cut lengths of string/yarn 15–25cm long.

Tie one end through the hole in each shape.

Make strings different lengths so the mobile hangs at varied levels.

6. Prepare the Mobile Base

Choose one of these for the top:

  • A stick or twig (nature look)

  • A bamboo skewer cut to safe size

  • A wire ring

  • Two sticks tied into an X shape

Punch or tie strings to hang it from.

7. Hang the Shapes

Tie each string onto the mobile base, spacing them out evenly so they don’t tangle.

8. Add the Hanging Loop

Tie one long piece of string to the top of the mobile so it can hang up at home.

9. Display

Hang them on the art line, outside on a tree, or take a group photo of everyone with their completed mobiles.
