PKC Amazing Race – Staff Overview

Today’s Amazing Race is a team-based walking challenge designed to encourage teamwork, problem-solving, physical activity, and fun. Each staff member will lead one team through a series of clue-based checkpoints, starting and finishing at school. Teams will be staggered to avoid mixing, must stay together at all times, and follow the provided play-by-play guide. The focus is on safety, participation, and positive team experiences — not speed or winning.



🔵 STEP 1 – GYM BRIEFING (START)

What to DO

  • Gather your team together in the gym

  • Ensure you have:

    • Your team

    • Clue cards (in order)

    • Your phone

  • Check everyone is wearing appropriate shoes


What to SAY

Today we’re doing the PKC Amazing Race. We’ll be walking together as a team, solving clues, and visiting a few places nearby. The most important rule is that we stay together and listen to instructions.


Safety Check

  • Count children

  • Remind: no running, stay with staff, road safety

  • Children all need hat, sunblock, shoes


Action

  • Read Clue 1

    • Welcome racers, the challenge begins,Stick with your team and follow the wins!From where you stand with balls and mats,Head out together — no running, no sprints, no chats.

      Go to the place where the school ends out back,Where fences and fields sit quietly stacked.Your next clue waits where learning once grew,Off you go now — Clue 2 is for you!


  • Leave the gym only when released


  • Walk to the back of Wairau Valley School - you'll see yellow ribbon tied to the fence, kids must find it to be given the next clue.


🏫 STEP 2 – BACK OF WAIRAU VALLEY SCHOOL (CLUE 2)

What to DO

  • Stop the group

  • Re-count children


What to SAY

Great job staying together. Before we move on, let’s check we’ve got everyone.

Action


  • Read Clue 2 -

    • Nice work racers, you made it here,Check your team — is everyone near?

      Now turn your steps towards shops nearby,Where icy treats wait to help you cool down and try.Remember your manners, walk don’t race,A tasty surprise waits at your next place!


  • Walk calmly towards the shops

Safety Check

  • Walk on footpaths

  • Stay together

  • Pause at crossings

  • Maintain staggered spacing from other teams


🥤 STEP 3 – SHOPS (SLUSHY STOP)

What to DO

  • Gather team in one spot

  • Distribute one small slushy per child

  • Monitor behaviour closely


What to SAY

This is our treat stop. Please stay with the group, drink your slushy here, and put rubbish in the bin.


Rules to Reinforce

  • No sharing

  • Walk only

  • Respect shop staff and public


Action

  • Ensure all slushies are finished

  • Dispose of rubbish

  • Read Clue 3 -

    • Cool drinks done — that hit the spot!

      Bins for rubbish — don’t forget that lot.

      Now it’s time to move again,

      To swings and slides and playground fun.Across from Minidales is where you’ll go,

      But slow and steady — not fast, not low.

      Your next clue waits where climbing is key,But first… playtime! (fifteen minutes, you’ll see!)

    STEP 4 – PLAYGROUND OPPOSITE Minidales

MANDATORY 15-MINUTE STOP

What to DO


Read this to the team then -


This stop is special — don’t rush through,Fifteen whole minutes of play for you!

Climb and swing and laugh and cheer,Stay where your staff can see you here.


When playtime’s done and time is right,Your next clue sends you back to school in sight.


  • Start a 15-minute timer

  • Supervise play closely

  • Ensure children stay within sight


What to SAY

This is our play stop. We must stay here for the full 15 minutes. You can play safely while I keep time.


Safety Check

  • Equipment used safely

  • No leaving playground area

  • Full headcount before leaving


Action

  • When timer ends, regroup

  • Read Clue 4 -


  • Back at school — you’re nearly there!

    Now head to where nature meets play!

    Logs and paths and spaces green,This is the calmest place you’ve seen.

    One last walk, you’re almost through,Your finish line is waiting for you!


    Walk back toward school


🌿 STEP 5 – SCHOOL NATURE PLAYGROUND

What to DO

  • Regroup in one area

  • Encourage calm behaviour

Optional Short Task

  • Team photo


Action

  • Read Final Clue -

    Follow this clue to where PKC stays,

    Your Amazing Race ends there today!

  • Walk together to the PKC room


🏁 STEP 6 – FINISH AT PKC ROOM

What to DO

  • Enter PKC room together

  • Inform lead staff you’ve finished

  • Celebrate effort


Final Safety Check

  • Headcount

  • Water break if needed


🚨 IF SOMETHING CHANGES

  • Child tired or upset: pause, support, rejoin when ready - Phone Rochelle in the case of emergency or if things are just not going well. She will come and meet you.

  • Team catching another team: slow pace or wait briefly

  • Weather issue: follow lead staff direction


⭐ STAFF REMINDERS

  • Walk at the pace of the slowest child

  • Praise teamwork often

  • Keep instructions short and clear

  • The goal is fun + safety, not speed
