Classic Christmas Sugar Cookies



Makes: approx. 24–30 cookies

Perfect for: rolling, cutting shapes, and decorating

Ingredients

  • 125g butter, softened

  • ¾ cup sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla essence

  • 2 cups plain flour

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • Pinch of salt

Optional decorations

  • Icing (store-bought or homemade)

  • Sprinkles, hundreds & thousands

  • Mini chocolate chips

  • Smarties or M&Ms

Method

  1. Cream butter and sugar together in a bowl until light and fluffy.

  2. Add egg and vanilla and mix well.

  3. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt until a soft dough forms.

  4. Lightly flour the bench and roll dough to about 5mm thick.

  5. Cut into Christmas shapes using cookie cutters.

  6. Place on a lined baking tray and bake at 180°C for 10–12 minutes, until just lightly golden.

  7. Cool completely before decorating.

Decorating Ideas

  • Ice with coloured icing and add festive sprinkles

  • Press chocolate chips or lollies into cookies before baking

  • Drizzle melted chocolate over cooled cookies

  • Use writing icing for names or patterns
