    • Cones, hoops, benches, mats

  2. SMORE Making

    • Let children roast marshmellows over the camp stove, add 1x chocolate on gram crackers.

    • Camp Stove S’mores – Staff Safety Guidelines

      1. General Safety Principles

      • The camp stove must only be operated by staff.

      • Children must never touch, light, adjust, or move the stove.

      • The stove must be set up in a clearly defined cooking zone that children cannot enter without permission.

      • One staff member is responsible for the stove at all times — this role must not be shared or left unattended.

      2. Set-Up Requirements

      • Set up the stove outdoors only in a well-ventilated area.

      • Place the stove on a flat, stable, non-flammable surface (e.g. concrete or paving).

      • Create a clear safety boundary around the stove using cones, benches, or tape (minimum 1–1.5 metres).

      • Keep all flammable items (paper, packaging, bags, clothing) well away from the stove.

      • Have the following within arm’s reach:

        • A bucket of water

        • Fire blanket or damp towel

        • First aid kit

      3. Staffing & Ratios

      • Minimum of 2 staff present during the activity:

        • Staff 1: Operates the stove and manages heat

        • Staff 2: Manages children, turns, and behaviour outside the cooking zone

      • Children participate one at a time or in pairs, depending on age and behaviour.

      4. Child Participation Rules

      • Children must:

        • Listen to instructions before approaching the cooking area

        • Stay seated or stand in the designated waiting area

        • Keep hands behind their back unless instructed

      • Use long skewers or sticks provided by staff only.

      • No running, pushing, or rough play anywhere near the stove.

      • Staff place and remove marshmallows from heat where needed (especially for younger children).

      5. Food Safety & Allergies

      • Check allergy information prior to the activity (e.g. dairy, gluten).

      • Offer an alternative option where required.

      • Ensure children wash or sanitise hands before and after the activity.

      • Marshmallows and food items are handled by staff where possible.

      6. Managing the Flame

      • Keep the flame low and controlled at all times.

      • Extinguish the flame immediately if:

        • A child becomes unsettled

        • Weather changes (wind gusts)

        • There is overcrowding near the cooking zone

      • Never leave the stove lit without direct supervision.

      7. After the Activity

      • Turn the stove off fully and allow it to cool before moving.

      • Store the stove out of reach of children.

      • Conduct a quick area check for hot surfaces or dropped items.

      • Record any incidents or near-misses in line with PKC procedures.

      8. Emergency Response

      • In the event of a burn:

        • Apply cool running water immediately

        • Follow first aid procedures

        • Notify the programme manager and parents as required

      • In the event of fire:

        • Turn off gas supply immediately if safe to do so

        • Use fire blanket or water

        • Follow emergency procedures

      ⭐ Staff Reminder

This activity is designed to be slow, calm, and well-controlled. If behaviour or conditions make this unsafe at any point, the activity must be stopped.
